VRMark Challenge Contest Launched on OC-ESPORTS, Starts Jan 28

Today we bring you news about a new contest that will be launched on OC-ESPORTS in just over a week’s time – welcome to the VRMark Challenge. The name of the contest kind of gives away some details. The VRMark Challenge is centered on the relatively new VRMark benchmark that is now part of the 3DMark suite from Futuremark. The contest begins on January 28th, finishing on the 28th of February exactly one month later.

The VRMark contest consists of two separate stages based around both the Orange Room benchmark and the more intense Blue Room benchmark. The VRMark Orange Room benchmark that is designed to asses if a PC meets the recommended hardware requirements for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR technologies. The Blue Room benchmark uses a huge 5K rendering resolution coupled with spectacular volumetric lighting effects, and is in fact one of the most demanding 3D benchmarks available today.

In terms of hardware limitations, it’s all very simple and straight forward. Overclockers can use any processor (or indeed any number of processors) with any single GPU. Bring it on! Futuremark verification link required.

Throwback Thursday: AMD Presents Kaveri in Taipei, OC Not As Good As Richland

It’s that time of the week when we take a nostalgic look at a point in the past which still resonates. Today we not going back too far in time, revisiting a point just three years ago when many of us where trying our best to get excited about AMD’s Kaveri platform chips which were launched in Taipei back in January 2014. It’s a story that certainly does resonate today as we edge closer to the launch of AMD’s highly anticipated Ryzen CPUs. Back in 2014, this is what Massman had to say:

“Those following us on social media will probably already know this, but yesterday AMD came to Taipei, Taiwan to present the new Kaveri micro-architecture. Since this was the last stop of their business trip, there's not much new to tell. From a performance perspective HSA seems to be interesting, although it's still too early to see the real effect. I enjoyed seeing references to overclocking on the marketing slides, especially highlighting the benefit of increasing the memory bandwidth. With HSA, system memory bandwidth is again a bit more important.”

“They didn't mention any early overclocking results, but during our chat behind-the-scene it became clear that AMD too was a bit underwhelmed by overclocking potential of the Kaveri APUs. Currently the maximum frequency on LN2 (internally) is about 7GHz, which is far away from the 8GHz the Richland APUs could do. From what I gather, the potential problem might be the new 28nm silicon. Because the CPU part is using a different process than the GPU part, mixing them together on one die is complicated. Early Q3 (June/July) they expect to have better yields after optimizing the process. Maybe the Kaveri refresh will bring us more overclocking joy.”

Clearly AMD had very little chance of rivaling Intel with its Kaveri APUs, especially in the area of Overclocking. All indications suggest however, that its new Zen architecture could put them back in the game. Fingers crossed. Catch the full article from January 11th 2014 here.

Overclocking World Championship - Las Vegas 2017 Qualifier: Full Roundup

The HWBOT World Tour 2017 got under way a week or so ago with its first stop ever in the US. Arriving in Las Vegas in time for CES 2017, one of the biggest tech industry trade shows of the year, the Las Vegas 2017 event included a Performance Matters Kick Off Event and Party, Overclocking Workshops for newcomers and of course, two days of intense Extreme Overclocking in the form the Overclocking World Championship Las Vegas 2017 Qualifier. The idea is simple. At each stop of the HWBOT World Tour, Extreme Overclockers are invited to compete for a spot in the World Championship Final at the end of the year and a chance to become Overclocking World Champion 2017. Let’s take a look at the scores and stories from the first leg of the OCWC Qualifier contest.

Overclocking World Championship 2017: The Ultimate Global OC Contest

The format of the Overclocking World Championship Qualifier will be identical at each of the World Tour locations this year. All Overclockers will be given unlimited access to LN2 and the task of trying to achieve the highest scores possible on a number of predetermined benchmarks. The final day of the event will involve the top four highest scoring Overclockers competing head to head in 1v1, 30 minute benching sessions. These will include two Semi-Finals, plus a Bronze Final and a Grand Final to decide the winner.

Early Bird Tickets for HWBOT World Tour – Poitiers 2017 Available, Book Now and Win a Seasonic Power Supply

Tickets for the first European leg of the HWBOT World Tour in Poitiers, France are now available. The good news is that if you book your ticket before March 15th you will be entered into a prize draw where you can win one of three Seasonic Snow Silent 750 Power Supplies.

The HWBOT team lands in France for the Gamers Assembly event on April 15th. Following up on last year’s visit, it should again prove to be a great way to expose Overclocking to broader audience of PC gamers and enthusiasts. As well as workshops and Ambient contests for newbies, there will of course also be an Overclocking World Championship Qualifier contest. The contest pits Extreme Overclockers in attendance against each other for two days of intense, competitive OC action. The top prize? A seat in the World Championship Finals at the end of the year.

A standard €50 entrance ticket is available for anyone who would like to join the overclocking area and overclock using air or watercooling. An LN2 Pass is available for €100 for individuals who want access to unlimited LN2 and the OCWC contest (note: contest participation is not mandatory). For the workshops and the Ambient overclocking contest, no specific ticket is required. Anyone that has access to the Gamers Assembly event and isn’t a member of the Apprentice or higher leagues can participate.

Anyone who purchases a ticket (either the 50 or 100 Euros option) before March 15 will be entered in a prize draw to win a Seasonic Snow Silent 750 PSU. The draw will happen on location at Gamers Assembly and requires the participant to be present.

The latest podcast from the guys at HardwareAsylum is available now. This week Dennis and Darren discuss the CES 2017 event in Las Vegas a week or so ago. Joined by some other special guests, the guys discuss the highlights in terms of innovative product launches, the general feelings about the format of the trade show and what they each think will be the biggest game changer of 2017. Every month or so we have a look at how well the overclocking teams adopt Rookie and Novice overclockers at HWBOT. The most friendly Rookie teams are based in North America mostly. The ASUS Republic of Gamers team is confirming as biggest magnet of Rookie overclockers. They enrolled 27 Rookies and 62 Novices. /r/overclocking, also from the USA, is following in second place with 16 Rookies and 77 Novices. In third place we find PC Games Hardware which has 13 Rookies and 31 Novices in the team.

In the Rookie League, topyoyoguybest from United States is leading with 403.30 points which is 65.1 points more than tyger81 from the France and 151.8 points more than ShadowPlay from Greece.

Most Valuable Submission of Week 2, 2017: Gold for Dancop (DE), K|ngp|n (US) and Rtsurfer (US)

In Week 2 of 2017, we received 4328 benchmark results from 1121 registered overclockers around the world. The majority of the submissions is coming from Rookie overclockers representing 64% of the active community. They were responsible for 42% of the submissions. We had a peek at the most valuable submissions in a breakdown per league.

The year 2017 is off to a strong start with Kaby Lake pushing the excitement for overclocking up in anticipation for AMD's Ryzen launch on February 28, 2017. In the second week of the year we once more find Dancop from Germany grabbing the top spot in the Elite category with a World Record in SuperPI 32M. The German overclocker outpaced Fredyama by a couple milliseconds and he posted 4min 17sec 359ms with the Core i7 7700K at 7048.2MHz. In the 3D category we find K|ngp|n from the USA. In the 3DMark11 Performance benchmark he scores a Global First Place with 2 GPUs, which also gives him second place in the overall Hall of Fame. Impressive! Last but not least we're happy to include Rtsurfer in the list of golden cup winners of the week. Backed by a strong retail Core i7 7700K, the US-based overclocker outscored all the industry-backed overclockers' results from launch week and takes the Cinebench 4xCPU Global First Place. Congratulations to everyone making the leaderboard this week!

The overclocking results submitted during Week 2 generated in total 245 World Record Points, 7475.9 Global Points, and 7440 Hardware Points. The distribution per League is as follows: 25% for Elite, 34% for Extreme, 7% for Apprentice, 14% for Enthusiast, 4% for Novice, and 23% for Rookie. The representation of the active community is as follows: 2% Elite, 8% Extreme, 3% Apprentice, 15% Enthusiast, 8% Novice, and 64% Rookie.

Overclocking World Championship – Sao Paulo 2017 Qualifier: Rules and Prizes Announced

Today we announce the Sao Paulo 2017 Qualifier rules and prizes for the Overclocking World Championship 2017. On February 3, 2017, the qualification tournament kicks off with a three-hour qualifier featuring three benchmarks. The top four overclockers return on February 4, 2017, to fight for a spot in the Final and win the prestigious ticket to the Overclocking World Championship at the end of the year.

The OCWC Qualifier in Sao Paulo will be spread over two days. Day 1 will act as a preliminary qualification round with the four fastest Overclockers moving on to Day 2 which will involve two Semi-Finals, a Bronze Final and a Grand Final. The overclockers will compete using Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors provided by Intel and HWBOT. The prizes included a ticket to the Overclocking World Championship, Seasonic power supplies, HyperX memory and SSDs.

HWBOT World Tour – Sao Paulo 2017 Event Details Emerge

The HWBOT World Tour – Sao Paulo 2017 is our second event of the year. Like last year, the Campus Party Sao Paulo is our venue for the only Latin American overclocking event of the year. From January 31 until February 5 you can join some of Brazil’s best overclockers to learn about overclocking and see them in action. The event features an interesting amateur workshop and of course a qualification tournament for the Overclocking World Championship.

The Overclocking World Championship Qualifier will be sponsored by Seasonic and is open to all overclockers. The extreme overclockers will use the latest Intel Kaby lake processor and have the choice of any LGA1151 motherboard. The qualification tournament kicks off on February 3rd, 2017, with a three-hour tournament featuring three benchmarks. The top-4 of the qualifier proceed to the finals on February 4th, where a 1v1 elimination tournament will decide who wins the Brazilian ticket for the Overclocking World Championship at the end of the year.

Throwback Thursday: GIGABYTE Tease X58X-OC Motherboard

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, a day of the week when we allow ourselves a nostalgic glance at a time in the past. This week we take you back to day in January 2011 when GIGABYTE leaked the first peak of the X58X-OC motherboard, arguably the first motherboard that was designed by an Overclocker, for Overclockers. The X58X-OC was of course designed by legendary Taiwanese Overclocker HiCookie, GIGABYTE’s in-house overclocker and overall performance guru.

The X58X-OC motherboard was the first board that was actually marketed as an Overclocking motherboard. It featured a stunning 12 phase VRM with POScaps, MPFC Chokes, and DriverMOSFETs – all way, way beyond spec. Plus it was the first board to feature individual buttons for changing CPU frequency. Even the back panel IO was paired back, offering just four USB ports, PS2 ports, basic audio and Ethernet. Back in 2011 this is what Dino had to say about the board, which at this time, had only been whispered about behind closed doors:

What do you get when you give an overclocker freedom to design a new OC board?

Cookie’s been busy and I hear he’s expecting a new bun out of the oven or did they say a board of some kind?!? She is matte black (hmm or white?!?) with orange stripes and some unusual looking features. Wait, where’s the rest of the I/O panel? Some of you know this board as the new “orange OC board” but in fact her real name is X58A-OC. I can’t wait to show you more of this board that’s designed by overclockers for overclockers. Stay tuned!
